Tax and your investments
We all know about Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs) and that you can invest £7,200 per year into one and not pay tax on growth or income, but what if you have more than £7,200 to invest?
Following the Chancellor's overhaul of the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) regime in 2008 it is more important than ever that your tax position is taken into account, not just now but also what you think it might be when you crystallize your investments. The exact disposition of investments will depend upon a number of factors which will be discussed during a financial review. However, as a rule of thumb any investment that generates interest or income, such as a Property Unit Trust should probably be held in a Life Bond wrapper, either on or offshore and any investment that generates growth should probably be in a Unit Trust portfolio against which your annual CGT exemption can be offset.
It stands to reason that any other investment that offers a tax-break should be considered, including Venture Capital Trusts (VCTs), Enterprise Investment Schemes (EISs) and of course Pensions. However, some of these can be very specialist in nature and their suitability would need to be reviewed in the light of your experience of investments and also your attitude to risk.
All of this highlights the need to talk to an experienced adviser who can walk you through the investment minefield and make sense of the gobbledegook that comes from the Investment managers.
